What are discount golf clubs?

THE STORE I USE:
Clone golf clubs from GigaGolf
Here are six reasons why.

Traditionally, the term "discount golf clubs" refers to generic and clone golf clubs. These are value-priced clubs which use similar designs and materials to the top brands, but at a more affordable price.

The term doesn't usually refer to popular brand clubs sold at lower-than-normal prices. The manufacturers of these top brands are often reluctant to allow their products to sell below a certain price.

The "problem" with clone golf clubs is that although they promise top designs and materials at value prices, this isn't always the case.

At one end of the spectrum you have independent manufacturers using new design and material trends (usually pioneered by the brands) to produce their own clubs.

These clone manufacturers offer clubs with modern design, quality and performance, at a much lower price than a traditional "branded" club.

The clones are often produced to compete directly with a specific brand. Which is why you'll find clone club sellers making statements like "comparable with the XYZ v1 Pro Iron".

Right at the other end of the spectrum, though, there are those club manufacturers who attempt to profit from producing cheap, low-quality clubs that bear an uncanny resemblance (particularly in name) to a more famous brand.

Those clone clubs are often defrauding both purchasers and brand manufacturers by violating copyrights, trademarks or patents.

Such practices are illegal and unethical. Taking a more pragmatic view - how much effort do you think such manufacturers will have bothered to invest in production, customer service and quality control, if they're only interested in exploiting someone else's name? Not a lot.

So at this site, when I talk of clone golf clubs, I only mean those products and suppliers representing quality clubs at a considerable saving over the prices you'd expect to pay for equivalent brands.

How do prices compare with the brands?
