Golf may seem to lack all logic and rationale at times, but at least the club manufacturers know what they’re doing. People use hybrids to replace the long irons. And for good reason. So why not build a complete iron set that recognizes that the same clubhead design doesn’t make sense in both a 3-iron and a 9-iron?
Thus was born the hybrid set…built for workability in the short irons and forgiveness in the long ones.
The Revelation irons are the clone golf world’s contribution to this new trend. The set as a whole is oriented toward forgiveness, thanks to larger clubfaces. And as you move from the shorter irons to the demonic longer ones, the clubhead changes to focus even more on ensuring accuracy and consistency.
The hybrid in the title of such sets has two meanings. As well as refering to the mix of club designs, the longer 3- and 4- irons are actually replaced by hybrid clubs. Which is no surprise when you consider the latter originally appeared as a replacement for those waif-like long irons so notoriously difficult to hit.
The 5 and 6 irons have relatively deep clubheads with wide soles. Not as utility as a true hybrid, but encouraging smoother strokes and higher launch trajectories.
The scoring irons then revert to a more traditional look, but still with a cavity back design favored in many game improvement irons.
Of course you may wonder why you can’t simply buy individual irons and hybrids and build your own “hybrid” set. You can of course.
The advantage of the Revelation set over a “mix and match” set is that the clubs within the set are designed to complement each other in terms of regular distance increments. There’s no need to worry about making sure the hybrid you buy fits with the other clubs in your set.
A custom-fit set of Revelation Hybrid irons costs around $170 in a standard configuration and is available from clone retailer GigaGolf.
