GX920 irons

THE STORE I USE:
Clone golf clubs from GigaGolf
Here are six reasons why.

Earlier this month I had a gift certificate to spend, and most of it went on some new Power Max GX920 irons from GigaGolf. The GX920s were a bestselling clone iron through 2006, and there’s a new high trajectory version for 2007 as well. So what are they all about and what led me to buy them for myself?

Photo of GX920 ironsFirst, stop reading if you’re one of the golfing elite. This isn’t a blade iron for those in complete control of the game. The other 99% of us can keep reading though.

The standard GX920 seeks to combine forgiveness with playability. That means that while it’s built to help ensure accuracy and stability, it still allows you to play around with the shot a little.

Not to the extent you can with a true tour blade. But enough so that this is not just a club for the high handicapper. Instead, it might be that “best of both worlds” iron for pretty much everyone bar the pro.

Cavity notch design in the GX920 ironsThat forgiveness comes primarily from the notched cavity back design you can see in my photo (left). The perimeter and toe/heel weighting gives you the stability that keeps off-center hits going straight.

The less-assured golfer also benefits from the confidence-building thicker topline you can see below.

If, however, your swing speed is on the slower side or you simply need a helping hand getting balls up and off the ground, then you might prefer the high trajectory version of these irons. The GX920 high launch irons follow the design of its older sister model, but have an even wider sole.

This extra weight down below shifts the center of gravity in the same direction, making it easier to get under the ball.

Both clubs have a thin face with a high coefficient of restitution. So as well as forgiveness and stability, you’ll be surprised at how much extra distance you can get out of them too.

I used GigaGolf’s eFit online custom fitting system to get my “made for me” GX920 irons. With the recommended UST graphite shafts, they cost around $200 for the full set. I’m very happy.
