If you want a smooth transition between all the clubs in your iron set, but aren’t keen on those longer irons, then a hybrid set might be the answer.
A hybrid iron set features hybrid clubs instead of your typical 3-, 4- and/or 5-irons, and “normal” irons for the 6-iron and up. You could simply buy individual hybrids, of course, and add them to your bag. But a dedicated hybrid set means that the lofts and other characteristics are specifically chosen to complement each other. No guesswork required.
This new set from Pinemeadow Golf combines Excel High Launch Plus irons with Excel Hybrid Woods. Shafts are from top brand Aldila, and the hybrids come with free headcovers.
The High Launch Plus irons are a classic notched cavity-back design. That’s golf speak for irons designed for stability and consistency, so suited to mid- and high-handicappers. The heavier, more solid feel to the clubs confirm that suitability. The rear also features a striking red medallion within that cavity, giving the set a nice dash of color.
The Excel hybrids are sturdy clubs-for-all-seasons. A solid build with an emphasis on the wood part of the wood-iron hybrid design. They’ve drawn comparisons with Callaway’s excellent Heavenwoods.
If you visit the Pinemeadow site, you’ll find many (favorable) comments from people who bought the clubs. Worth looking through before committing to a purchase. The price for the set starts at around $219, with shaft/grip upgrades and more hybrid clubs forcing the price upwards to a maximum of about $270.
If you’re a very confident low-handicap golfer, this is not for you. For the rest of us, definitely worth a look.
