Now here’s a club for those who like their technology cutting edge. The two hottest developments of recent years are hybrids and movable weights. Put the two together and you have such technological masterpieces as Pinemeadow Golf’s Command Hybrids.
The whole point of the hybrid is to replace the long irons with an easier-to-hit utility club. So the Command version is picked to replace your 3, 4 and 5 irons with lofts of 19, 22 and 25 degrees respectively.
But accuracy on the long irons isn’t our only problem. How about a bit of help playing our preferred shots? That’s where the movable weights come in. There are two weight plugs in the rear toe and rear heel of the Command Hybrids. They’re at the back and perimeter of the club to help with stability and ball launch. But by changing the weight balance, you can also affect your trajectory.
Keep the two plugs the same weight and you encourage straight shots. Put a heavier weight in the toe and you encourage a fade. Put more weight in the heel and you encourage a draw shot.
So it’s a kind of on-spec customization. Take the basic reliability and versatility of a custom-fit hybrid and then get the chance to optimize the set up for a particular style of play. Reading through the customer reviews, it seems most are impressed with the additional confidence it gives them shooting for the green from distance or out of the rough.
The Command Hybrids come with two 2g weights and two 6g weights and cost around $39 each. See the Pinemeadow site for details.
