Movable weights in drivers hit the big time back in mid-2004 when TaylorMade put out the groundbreaking r7 quad. Since then, many other golf companies have incorporated movable weight technology into drivers, fairway woods and other clubs.
The Command Q4 is the latest customizable driver from Pinemeadow Golf. It has the now-standard titanium body and beta titanium face, plus four weight inserts you can play with to adjust the balance of the club.
The driver comes with two 6g tungsten weights and two 2g aluminum weights. The holes for these four weights are in the front toe, front heel, and rear of the clubhead.
This gives you six different potential weight configurations:
Loading the heavier weights at the front encourages a lower ball flight. Loading them at the back encourages a higher ball trajectory. Placing one or both of the lighter weights at the toe end of the driver leads to draw shots. Placing them at the heel end encourages fades. And if you want more weights to play with, you can buy these extra from Pinemeadow.
The movable weights concept is very popular as it lets you compensate for any inherent biases in your swing. If you need help getting the ball up, for example, you’d configure the club for a higher trajectory.
If you read the customer reviews, you’ll find the word “straight” featuring in most of them. However, the flexibility in setup seems better suited to curing hooks and slices than changing the height of the ball flight.
The only downside is that four weight holes places a burden on the weight and strength structure of a driver. As a result, the Command Q4 is “only” 400cc…a touch smaller than the 460cc behemoths now dominating driver sales.
